Fabric vs. the old data warehouse

The old data warehouse pattern meant three tools and three teams: one for ingestion, one for the warehouse, one for the semantic layer everyone argued about.

Fabric collapses that into one governed estate. The lakehouse, the semantic model and the reporting layer live in the same place, under the same permissions model.

That does not remove the hard work of agreeing what a metric means. It does remove the integration tax you were paying just to get three tools talking to each other.

For most SMEs, the win is not a bigger warehouse — it is fewer places for the truth to disagree with itself.
